So Friday night I spent 6 hours in the ER. Here is the story...
I came home from work, like I would any other Friday evening, and started cooking dinner. I was thinking about Potato's and Italian sausage. I was chopping up the potatoes when I was distracted for just a moment and cut myself. I didn't realize how bad it was until I rinsed it under the sink. I cut off the entire fingerprint of my left pointer finger. Yes, the whole fingerprint! All I could think about at the time was that I needed to get to the hospital, and fast. There was a lot of blood. Thank goodness Auntie Kim answered her phone and met us at the hospital, I really didn't want the kids sitting in the waiting room of the ER. Anyway, I waited for a minimum of 30-45 minutes while those with a minor cough went in ahead of me. What happened to you go in order of severity? I guess bleeding on the floor isn't as bad as a little cough. But what do I know. LOL. I finally went back to the triage area to be 'assessed'. The nurse didn't believe that I cut off the whole fingerprint, do she decided to pull of my washcloth to take a peek. OMG did I yell, it had stared to stick to the washcloth. So of course I started pouring blood on the floor. All of my yelling brought all of the triage area to take a peek around the corner. And the nurse had the gall to ask me if it was really that bad. I was losing a lot of blood and gave her one heck of a look and said, in between tears, of course it hurts that bad. So after that I was sent back to the waiting room to wait for a room in the back to open up. At least I got to pass the time this time by watching a cute 6 month old baby. Once they called me to the back, yet another nurse/doctor took a look at my finger, which started the bleeding and crying all over again. She was unsure how to proceed. She didn't know if she was going to be able to stitch it up or what. So she said she wanted to numb me (finally) so I wouldn't feel the pain of her messing with it. OMGoodness, those shots were very painful as well. Well after all of those shots, the tip of my finger never got numb. So I felt her try to pinch it together to see if it was possible to stitch it closed. Nope. Not an option. She said she needed to consult with the professionals and would get back to me. Needless to say that at this point in time I've been bleeding for about 5 hours straight. Now I had been hot all evening. I was wearing a sweatshirt and couldn't have taken it off because of my finger. I all of a sudden got the chills and my stomach didn't feel so good. I was starting to get concerned about loss of blood. So Shawn went out to get the nurse/dr and he saw them shopping for shoes on the Internet. The doctor didn't seem to be concerned, but I was. I kept telling them that I started to bleed at 6pm and it was about 10pm at this point. But I had seen so many different people, I don't think it sunk in for them for at least another 30 minutes when she still couldn't get the bleeding to stop. Finally, after consulting with someone they came up with a collagen foamy thing that absorbed the blood and adhered to my skin. It's about time! So I left the hospital at about 11:30 at night, not having eaten anything. (I was cooking dinner.) So that was my eventful Friday evening. I have graphic pictures of the hole in my finger, but I wont post those as not everyone has a strong stomach. If you want to see, let me know and I can send those privately.
